Review: Bulletproof Coffee

As it is Motivation Monday, I want to share a recent addition to my life and diet. Enjoy!

I went to a Unleash the Power Within, a Tony Robbins seminar, in Sydney, Australia in September 2016. I was there in support of my girlfriend, as one of his seminars was on her bucket-list. Aside from the uplifting messages and actions that you are encouraged to take, there was a number of interesting stalls in the foyer that Tony had specifically aligned with, whether because he used the products himself, or was a fan of what they were accomplishing.

Enter Bulletproof Coffee.

The idea of putting fats in a coffee was not particularly appealing, so I paid it no mind, and culminated my four days of clapping, yelling, hugs from strangers and furious  note taking with a slow walk over hot coals. My girlfriend Ella, though, was intrigued. Fast forward 9 months and Bulletproof Coffee is now a part of both of our morning routines.

Ingredients

Below is the contents of their starter kit:

Grass-Fed Ghee – 13.5 oz
Brain Octane Oil – 16 oz.
The Original Whole Bean Coffee – 12oz

So when I’m talking about the Bulletproof Coffee we have been using, it’s a mixture of these 3 ingredients that make a beverage which, I believe, boosts  and sustains your energy for longer throughout the day. Drawing your energy from fats is an alternative and superior source to sugars, and doesn’t give you that crash that a lot of simple sugar based products can do. Carbohydrates (sugars) can give you blood sugar spikes, which is the cause of your crashes, whereas fats and proteins release the energy slower for a more stable and prolonged energy lift. I found a great article online that explains in detail the energy comparisons.

Right, so what are these 3 ingredients???

Ghee

The description provided on Bulletproof.com

“Ghee is a clarified form of butter that’s been popular in Indian and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years. It has a host of benefits, including greater nutrient density than butter and more versatility when you’re cooking.”

Brain Octane Oil

Essentially this is MCT oils, which are extracted from coconut oils. They are distilled from coconut oil for purity and provide your body with a clean, quick and reliable form of energy, all the while promoting fat loss. There has been a smear campaign by the food industry against fats in the past, and now the chickens are coming home to roost as MCT oils (and ketogenic diets) are taking the health food community by storm.

Coffee

As the name implies. The Bulletproof Coffee has taken lengths to source and roast their beans to a high standard, more information can be found on their website.

Preparation

As outlined on Bulletproof.com;

Step 1: Brew

Choose your favorite brewing method and use 2 ½ tablespoons freshly ground beans for every 9 ounces of water.

Step 2: Bulletproof

  • Add 1-2 Tbsp of Grass-Fed Ghee.
  • If you’re new to Bulletproof Coffee, add 1 tsp Bulletproof Brain Octane to your coffee, gradually increasing up to 1-2 Tbsp.
  • Blend for 20-30 seconds until it’s creamy and frothy.

So what does it actually do for me?

As I explained earlier, this has become part of my daily routine and I can attest that I am seeing benefits. For me, these include;

  • Longer lasting energy through the day without jitters or crashes
  • Great taste
  • A perfect addition to my nootropics regimen, which are best taken with fats
  • Helping change my body to draw on fats for energy, rather than carbohydrates

There are downsides though.

If you are not accustomed to ingesting MCT or coconut oils, you may have to start small with the amounts you add to your coffees. At first, it caused me to frantically find a toilet a little while after drinking.

In fact, today I was almost caught out at the supermarket, but I was able to stay calm and make it to safety.

Just be mindful of what your body can deal with, and adjust the size of your servings from there.

Conclusion

I think this can be a great way to augment your diet and get your body to start drawing from a superior fuel source. You will move away from spikes and crashes in your blood sugar while promoting fat loss. I am not opposed to sourcing different products with the same ingredients, as Bulletproof products tend to be on the expensive side. I’ll keep you posted with the cheaper comparisons when my ingredients run out.
